Utahns were given two of 89 national Take Pride in America Awards by Interior Secretary Manuel Lujan in Washington.
Actress Linda Evans and singer Jimmy Dean were among the celebrities on hand Tuesday to honor the Logan Ranger District of the Wasatch-Cache National Forest, and Gregg Simonds, manager of the Deseret Land & Livestock Corp.Simonds was given his award for ensuring his corporation improves the watershed rangelands while achieving profits through the sale of livestock, sand and gravel, hunting rights and hay.
The Interior Department said his efforts show "good land management and conditions are compatible with the profit motive."
The Logan Ranger District was honored for coordinating volunteer efforts by 1,750 citizens of all ages in 130 different projects. The campaign helped earn the designation of "cleanest, best-kept ranger district in the National Forest system."
The Interior Department said the projects "covered a wide spectrum of activities that included: monthly cleanup projects; trail maintenance and cleanup; campground hosts and maintenance; sign, fence and bridge construction; installation of fish structures and dam grubbing.
