Soldiers use rifle butts to fend off angry Mohawks after the Canadian troops raided the Indian reserve for a search-and-seizure operation. The troops eventually fired tear gas to disperse the crowd. At least 82 people were hurt. It was one of the most violent clashes since the Mohawk standoff began more than two months ago over plans by the city of Oka, 18 miles west of Montreal, to build a golf course extension on what the Indians say is tribal land.
