An interim sheriff will be appointed in Garfield County, and the county's Republican Central Committee is seeking applicants. The submission deadline is Friday, Sept. 21.
The opening came Sept. 1 when Sheriff Robert Judd resigned to accept a law-enforcement position as captain of outside security at the Central Utah Correctional Facility at Gunnison. He had filed for re-election but withdrew his candidacy, leaving police officer Than Cooper, a Republican from Panguitch, as the only candidate. The resignation left the county without an officially elected or appointed sheriff. Chief Deputy John Niemann has been acting sheriff.
Elaine Baldwin, chairman of the Central Committee, said applicants must be certified Category I peace officers by Police Officers Standards and Training. Application forms are available at the county clerk's office.
State law requires the county commission to appoint an interim sheriff if the position becomes vacant for more than 30 days prior to an election. The committee then is charged with submitting up to three names as candidates to the commission for final selection.
County commissioners are expected to appoint an interim sheriff at the Sept. 24 commission meeting.
