President Ezra Taft Benson, the 91-year-old leader of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, underwent surgery Wednesday at LDS Hospital to relieve pressure on the brain caused by a blood clot or other fluids.

Church spokesman Don LeFevre said the church leader was expected to remain in the hospital for at least a week.LeFevre said the surgery was performed by Dr. Bruce F. Sorensen. It is the same operation that former LDS Church President Spencer W. Kimball underwent.

Hospital spokesman Tim Madden said President Benson was admitted about 12:30 p.m. Tuesday for observation for an unspecified ailment and spent "a restful night."
