Salt Lake County sheriff detectives are investigating two unrelated rapes that occurred within a block of each other early Wednesday.

According to a sheriff's report, the first rape occurred about 1:45 a.m on Seventh East near 42nd South. The victim, a 15-year-old girl, was walking south when she noticed a man following her.The girl crossed the street and began to run, but the man chased her and threw her into some bushes near a condominium complex. The attacker threatened her, told her not to scream and raped her. He then told her not to move for five minutes and fled from the scene. She ran to a nearby home and called the sheriff's office.

Detective Jim Vaughn said a suspect was arrested by a K-9 officer who happened to be in the area and saw a man running from the scene. The suspect was identified by the victim and was then booked into jail.

The second rape occurred about 5:30 a.m. at about Seventh East and 43rd South. A woman, 55, was waiting at a bus stop when a man in a blue car pulled up next to her. The man pointed a gun at the victim and ordered her into his car. He drove her to a secluded area nearby, raped her, then drove her back to the bus stop. Detectives have no suspects.
