Rain, high winds and lightning storms hit portions of Utah Wednesday afternoon and evening, bringing much-needed moisture but also injuring a skateboarder.
Shane C. Waterfield, 13, son of Craig and Vickie Waterfield, West Valley City received burns on his neck, chest, ankle and hip when hit by lightning.The youth was in stable condition Thursday at Primary Children's Medical Center.
Meanwhile, Eric Depping, 17, a Salt Lake youth who received second-degree burns when he was struck by lightning Tuesday evening in Hobble Creek Canyon, Utah County, remained in serious but stable condition in the Utah Valley Regional Medical Center. He was struck on a family camping trip.
Despite the injuries, Depping was lucky the shotgun shells in his pocket and around his waist did not explode. "If the shells had exploded, it could have blown him in half," Clark Caras, a Medical Center spokesman.
The storm brought more than an inch of moisture to the Olympus Cove area in Salt Lake County and lesser amounts to other areas.
