A Brigham Young University student was arraigned Wednesday in 4th Circuit Court on manslaughter charges stemming from a rollover July 7 that led to the death of a passenger in his car.
Patrick Harold Newton and two passengers, all three 18-year-old BYU students living in Provo, were eastbound on Canyon Road when Newton's car rolled and flipped into the Provo River. Newton swam to safety and another passenger found an air pocket and awaited rescuers, but Julianna Crosby drowned after being pinned underwater.Newton is charged with recklessly causing Crosby's death. Manslaughter is a second-degree felony, punishable by up to 15 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
Judge Joseph Dimick said he will contact Newton's attorney before setting a date for the preliminary hearing. Newton was released without bail.
