The Salt Lake Trappers extended their Pioneer League Southern Division lead to three games Wednesday night, taking a 4-2 win over Idaho Falls while second-place Butte was losing 9-7 to Pocatello.
Myron Gardner pitched into the seventh inning and Lee Carballo and Michael Gibbons finished off the Braves to give the Trappers their ninth win in 10 games. The series continues tonight and Friday.Gardner, 2-4, allowed seven hits and one run in 6 2/3 innings, the I.F. run coming on Greg Harper's solo homer in the fourth. The Trappers had taken a 1-0 lead on Mando Verdugo's RBI single in the first and later went ahead 4-1 with two runs in the sixth on pitcher Paul Bacosa's wild pitch and balk and another run in the seventh on Kelly Zane's single.
Carballo gave up the Braves' other run, a solo homer by Steve Lopez in the eighth, but Gibbons pitched a perfect ninth inning.
