A Salt Lake animal-control officer shot and killed two deer Monday morning after wildlife officials were unable to contain the animals.

The shootings occurred about 8 a.m. near 750 West and Fifth South after another officer spent several hours trying to calm and capture the animals.According to a police report, the deer became nervous when wildlife officials and animal-control officer Wallace Hoffman arrived at the scene. Hoffman fired three shots of buck shot at the animals.

Animal-control officer Frank Crowe said the wildlife officials and officers tried to net the two animals first. When they were unsuccessful, they made the decision to shoot them. He said the officers were worried the animals would run into the freeway interchange.
