The House, over the protests of two subcommittee chairmen, has given its blessing to a land deal that would bring taxpayers 108,000 acres of Florida swampland for a valuable piece of downtown Phoenix.

Sent to the Senate on Wednesday was legislation to authorize the exchange, which was negotiated initially by the Interior Department and redrawn by Arizona lawmakers to bring their state a slice of the action. The deal could cost the Treasury some $100 million, according to Reps. Sidney Yates, D-Ill., chairman of the Appropriations interior subcommitee, and George Miller, D-Calif., chairman of the Interior water and power resources subcommittee.
