A former Murray High School track coach charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor may not be prosecuted because of a deferral agreement reached Tuesday.

Dennis E. Dawson, 44, 1315 E. Parkway Ave. (2400 South), pleaded not guilty in December to one Class B misdemeanor charge of contributing to the delinquency of a minor after two Division of Wildlife Resource officers said they found him alone with a 16-year-old female Murray High student Nov. 10.A jury trial scheduled to begin Tuesday morning in 5th Circuit Court was called off after Salt Lake County prosecutor David Walsh and Dawson's attorney, Steven C. Tycksen, agreed to the diversion. Walsh cited problems with evidence as the reason for settling the case with the deferral agreement.

Dawson is scheduled to appear before 5th Circuit Judge Michael Burton Wednesday to sign the agreement. Dawson's signature on the deferral agreement is not an admission of guilt, Tycksen said, but rather a promise that he will not commit any criminal acts or have contact with the student named in the criminal charge during a one-year deferral period.
