A 33-year-old Orem woman who last week pleaded no contest to second-degree felony child abuse will be sentenced Sept. 2 before 4th District Judge Ray M. Harding.
Loretta Larsen, charged with physically abusing her 6-year-old boy, entered the plea in exchange for the dismissal of one count of Class A misdemeanor child abuse.During her arraignment in 4th District Court, Larsen pleaded not guilty to the charges. She was scheduled to be tried by jury July 26.
Deputy County Attorney Kay Bryson said Larsen changed her plea because of the persuasive evidence in the case.
She was arrested April 5 by Orem police after they received reports that her son was locked in his bedroom and handcuffed to the bed. Police reports say he was suffering from malnutrition.
Larsen's former live-in boyfriend, Richard Kim Shaw, testified during the woman's preliminary hearing that the boy went without food for two to three days at a time.
