Two motorists who suffered only minor injuries when their car broadsided a moving train Tuesday are lucky to be alive, law enforcement authorities said following the 11:58 a.m. mishap.

John Jordan, 18, Orem, was treated for minor cuts and bruises and then released from Utah Valley Regional Medical Center, a hospital spokesman said. Angela Walker, 20, American Fork, also was treated for cuts and bruises, and was admitted to the hospital for observation.Utah County Deputy Sheriff R.A. Taylor said Jordan and Walker were eastbound on 20th South when their car collided with a northbound train crossing the road at about 540 West. The intersection is marked with railroad crossing signs but has no flashing lights to warn motorists of approaching trains.

Taylor said vegetation in the area obscures approaching trains from eastbound traffic. He said the train entered the intersection just ahead of the car, which spun around after striking the train's engine. The car was totaled.
