A huge jump in demand for aircraft and defense materiel sent new orders for big-ticket capital goods up a rousing - and unexpected - 0.8 percent in June, the largest one-month gain since December 1985, the Commerce Department reported Tuesday. A 35.5 percent increase in new orders for transportation equipment, mostly aircraft, paced the demand for $125.2 billion in new orders, an 8.8 percent jump, the department's Census Bureau said.
