A Sandy man convicted of sexually assaulting a woman in her trailer home last year is spending a minimum five years in Utah State Prison.

Bernard Franklin Cude Jr., 32, was convicted by jury in February of aggravated sexual assault and aggravated burglary in connection with the Aug. 3 attack on a woman in her mobile home in Draper.Third District Judge Pat Brian sentenced Cude last week to serve a five-year minimum mandatory sentence on the sex charge and an indeterminate sentence of five-to-life on the burglary charge.

According to testimony at the trial, the woman, 22, was sitting alone in her living room about 10 p.m. when she heard noises in her bedroom. She grabbed a decorative dagger and walked to the room where she confronted Cude, who said, "You know what I want."

A struggle ensued during which she was fondled sexually but was able to stab him several times before he fled out the window.

An anonymous phone call led police to Cude's home, where officers found incriminating evidence.
