Interested groups can adopt a stretch of highway and keep it free of litter in a program approved by the Utah Department of Transportation.

The "Adopt-A-Highway" program is modeled after a similar operation in Texas which UDOT spokesman Kim Morris said is highly successful.Under guidelines adopted at a recent commission meeting, participating groups would agree to pick up designated sections of highway at least three times a year over a two-year period.

UDOT would place a highway sign on the adopted section recognizing the group's efforts, Morris said. The plan could be ready to begin by mid-September.
