A 1-year-old girl died of heat stroke after her 16-year-old mother left her in the car with the windows rolled up for two hours while she went shopping, authorities said.

The child was pronounced dead at 3:50 p.m. Thursday at Methodist Medical Center. The temperature in the Dallas area at the time the child was in the car was between 87 and 90 degrees, officials said. The mother, whose name was withheld because she is a minor, was detained by juvenile authorities and released Friday.

Police said they would refer the case to a juvenile court judge to determine what action, if any, should be taken.
