Soldiers fired tear gas and rubber bullets at Palestinian youths during a violent clash in the walled Old City Saturday, sending hundreds of Arab shoppers fleeing from a crowded market where they were shopping for a religious feast.

Arab youths hurled bottles, rocks and debris at the soldiers, who fired tear gas and rubber bullets, witnesses and Israel Radio said. Two people were injured, an Israeli soldier hit in the head with a rock and an Arab youth struck in the head with a bottle, the radio said.Hundreds of frightened shoppers panicked and fled along the maze of narrow cobblestone alleys inside the Old City. They had been buying meat, vegetables and sweets for the Id al-Adha feast marking the end of the haj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, one of Islam's holiest site.
