The caretaker of the Old Mill in Big Cottonwood Canyon died Thursday of an accidental gunshot wound to the head.
Corey Lether, 31, was flown by helicopter to University Hospital about 6 a.m., shortly after the sheriff's office was notified of a shooting, said Capt. Bob Jack.Lether and a companion had apparently been drinking and were playing with a .44-caliber pistol when it discharged. "(Lether) thought he had unloaded it," Jack said. The victim was pronounced dead about 10 a.m., said a nursing supervisor.
Lether had been residing in an apartment in the rear of the Old Mill, 6875 Big Cottonwood Canyon Road.
