A driver whose pickup truck slammed into a crowded church bus, killing 27 people, was indicted Friday on 27 counts of murder and 57 other charges, including drunken driving.

Prosecutors had said they would seek to to have the driver, Larry Mahoney, indicted for capital murder - a charge that carries the death penalty, but they decided shortly before going before the grand jury that a capital charge was not warranted. If convicted on the charges against him, Mahoney faces life in prison, though he could be eligible for parole in 12 years.
