Sikh separatists killed 12 people in four attacks across northern Punjab, including five members of a moderate Sikh faction opposed to the extremists who were gunned down inside a temple, police said Friday.

Police said an unspecified number of attackers late Thursday stormed into a Sikh temple in Singhbala village, 30 miles east of Sikh holy city of Amritsar. The gunmen opened fire, killing five followers of the Tarna Dal Sikh group that is opposed to the cause of the extremists.

Police said they suspect the same group of gunmen shortly afterward staged raids on two nearby villages in which five people were killed.
