Johanna Irmgardt Schumann Kempe, a local school teacher and writer, died Monday in Salt Lake City at the age of 69.

She was born on Jan. 30, 1919, in Berlin and immigrated to the United States in 1930. On May 11, 1944, she married Fritz G. Kempe.Mrs. Kempe spent her life continuing her education. She graduated from New York City's Hunter College in 1941. At age 66, she received her master's degree in German studies. She was working toward her doctorate degree. She was a member of the League of Utah Writers and the Utah State Poetry Society and has written many children's books and plays.

But Mrs. Kempe's greatest joy came as a school teacher. She taught grade school for more than 30 years, much of that time at Granite School District's Canyon Rim Elementary School. After retirement, she tutored privately. She was also a member of the National Education Association.

The viewing will be at Mackay Cottonwood Mortuary, 4670 Highland Drive, Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. Outdoor memorial services will be held in the meadow across from Log Haven in Millcreek Canyon at 4:30 p.m. Thursday. Graveside services will be private.

Contributions may be made to the Johanna S. Kempe Scholarship Fund Memorial Account at the University of Utah, 304 Park Building, Salt Lake City, 84112. The fund will support studies of retired women who pursue graduate studies in the humanities.
