A Magna man escaped injury Monday in a canoe accident on the Raccoon River that claimed the life of a 25-year-old Des Moines man.
Police discovered the body of Arthur Mutter about a quarter mile downstream from where he disappeared beneath the surface.Mutter's brother-in-law, Robert Bailey of Magna, was able to swim to safety after the craft tipped over near a dam just west of downtown.
Des Moines police Sgt. Leonard Murry said the two men tried to get out of the canoe before it turned over in the turbulent water Monday afternoon.
Bailey, 17, swam to shore and looked back, but didn't see Mutter resurface, Murry said.
Police searched for several hours and recovered the body just before 9 p.m. during their last pass over that area of the river. Officers said they turned off their motor and the current took them right to the body.
