Salt Lake fire officials are investigating the cause of a fire that destroyed the second story of an abandoned house at 371 W. Sixth North Monday.

Battalion Chief Gordon Nicholl said the fire broke out about 3:43 p.m. and 20 firefighters had the blaze contained in 15 minutes. Nicholl said the fire caused about $1,500 in damage and is considered suspicious.Apparently the fire started on the second story of the house.

"We had a heck of a time getting up to the second floor because the staircase had been cut off about 8 feet from the ground," Nicholl said. "We had to use ladders just to get up to the stairs to the second story."

The house had been boarded up for some time and there were no power or gas lines to the home. Neighbors said the house had been occupied by transients in the past few weeks, but no one was found in the house.

The fire is still under investigation.
