Three U.S. Navy aviators rescued by the Vietnamese navy after ditching their plane left Bangkok for their Philippine base on Tuesday. The three, whose twin-engine light transport plane crashed into the sea on July 12, passed through Bangkok on their way from Ho Chi Minh City, formerly Saigon, to their base near Manila. Lt. Elizabeth Steinnecker, 29, Lt. Richard Maurer, 30, and Petty Officer Michael Neel, 34, who were wearing flight overalls, looked relaxed and happy as they boarded the plane to the Philippines. Vietnam and the United States do not have diplomatic relations, but Hanoi is seeking to break its comparative isolation from non-communist states.
