A 13-year-old Boy Scout from Orem fell to his death Saturday morning while hiking a short distance from his troop at Stewart Falls.
The Utah County Sheriff's Office would not release the name until relatives had been notified.The boy and a friend were hiking back to the group when the victim lost his hand hold and fell about 50 feet. He then slid 75 feet down a steep slope.
According to the sheriff's office, the boy was flown to the Utah Valley Regional Medical Center where he was declared dead.
The youngster was camping with a group of Scouts and two leaders at Theater in the Pines above Sundance.
In an unrelated incident, a 15-year-old Scout from Orem fell 30 feet Friday evening on a hike above Aspen Grove on Mount Timpanogos. According to the sheriff's office, the boy's Scoutmaster administered first aid to the youngster through the night. He was flown to UVRMC by helicopter Saturday morning and later released.
