A Washington Terrace firefighter has been suspended and an assistant fire chief reprimanded following an investigation of drinking and use of illegal fireworks by department members July 4.

Fire Chief Rod Ashton was out of town Wednesday and missed a special board of review meeting held by officers of the part-time volunteer fire department and Mayor Brad Dee.But Dee said afterward that "when Ashton comes back from Denver, if he comes back, we're going to have some strong words with the fire chief."

The board's meeting was held during an executive session of the city council after a resident and several fire department members complained about the incident.

City officials suspended firefighter Mike Rose for 30 days, put him on probation for six months and issued him a letter of reprimand.

The board also issued a letter of reprimand to assistant chief Casey Anderson. Anderson was not present when fireworks were set off but was held responsible by the review panel because he was the officer in charge of personnel.
