The Showdown Classic golf tournament, which will be played at the Jeremy Ranch Golf Club July 11-17, will be on more solid footing this year thanks to commitments from eight corporate sponsors.
Governor Norm Bangerter and Jay Woolley, director of the Utah Travel Council and co-chairman of the Showdown advisory committee, announced at a Monday press conference that the eight sponsors had each agreed to contribute $50,000 for a total of $400,000.Another $50,000 sponsor was also expected.
The eight corporate sponsors are: American Express, Pepsi Cola, KUTV, Larry Miller Toyota, U.S. West-Mountain Bell, KLUB/KISN Radio, Park City Olympic Hotel and Maxwell House Coffee Co. of General Foods.
"These commitments are a great start toward making the 1988 Showdown Classic financially the best tournament ever," said Gov. Bangerter at a Monday press conference with representatives from eight corporate sponsors.
Woolley said the tournament is important to the Utah economy because it generates about $5 million in tourism.
"This earlier date is very beneficial for the tournament in many respects," Woolley said.
"It means we can coordinate the Days of '47 activities, which will occur a week after the tournament."
Over the next two months, Showdown marketing activities will concentrate on obtaining commitments from small businesses and groups to sponsor the 1988 event.
