Bountiful attorney Nelda Bishop has announced her candidacy for the District 23 Senate seat, which includes Bountiful, Woods Cross, North Salt Lake and Davis counties.

As the past president of the Davis County League of Women Voters, she has organized numerous meet-the-candidates meetings and public meetings, and has served as an election judge and mass meeting host. She has served as a volunteer lobbyist at the Legislature for the PTA, Common Cause and the League of Women Voters.

"The biggest challenges the state faces include retaining quality education, which now takes 70 percent of the state budget," she said, "and being sure the bulk of education money goes into the classroom."

Another challenge, Bishop said, is attracting clean industry. "We cannot afford to keep educating students who move to other states by the time they are taxpayers."

Bishop, a former high school English teacher, is a volunteer attorney for poverty clients through Legal Aid and Legal Services, as well as being a court advocate for abused and neglected children.
