Beverly Buettner's afternoon stroll through the wilderness north of this Yellowstone National Park gateway community turned into a frightening experience when she was attacked and trampled by a moose.

Buettner, talking from her hospital bed at Ennis, said Sunday's attack left her with three broken ribs and a punctured lung. She said the moose saw her as she was walking along the Madison River, charged, knocked her to the ground and kicked her several times in the head, back and chest before fleeing.

"It was a place that belongs to the wild animals, and I was trying to get out of there as fast as I could as soon as I realized there may be an animal nearby," Buettner, who owns a West Yellowstone health food store, said.
