Trial of four men accused of killing Navajo tribal police officers Andy Begay and Roy Lee Stanely has been delayed until Monday morning.
Charged with the killings are Thomas Cly, Marques Atene, Vinton Bedonie and Ben Atene Jr.The slain officers were discovered Dec. 5, 1987, in the back of a burned-out police van on the Navajo Indian Reservation near Monument Valley, San Juan County.
The trial had been scheduled to start Friday. But because jury selection was taking a long time U.S. District Judge J. Thomas Greene decided to impanel the jury Friday and begin the actual trial after the weekend break.
A panel of 52 potential jurors is required, so that 12 jurors and two alternates are left after the defense and government can use the agreed-upon number of peremptory challenges.
