Search operations continued Thursday in southern Utah and northern Arizona for a Chandler, Ariz., pilot and his son, missing on a flight from Burley, Idaho, to Chandler.

On the plane were pilot Sherman Flake, about 52, and his son, Scott, about 19, said Lt. Ron Lillie, Utah Civil Air Patrol emergency services coordinator.Lillie said five CAP planes searched late Wednesday and 15 were in the air Thursday morning in Utah and about an equal number in Arizona, looking for the single-engine Piper Tri-Pacer.

The aircraft took off at 7 a.m. Wednesday and had been reported as having failed to make a scheduled fueling stop at Fillmore, said CAP Lt. Col. Jerry Wellman.

But Lillie said early Thursday that information from three sources shows the plane landed on a dirt road in Fillmore, taxied up to a convenience store, filled its tanks with automobile gasoline and departed that at 10 a.m.
