The Utah Air National Guard's director of operations for the air staff has been promoted to brigadier general and will assume the responsibility of chief of staff for air.

Gary Nelson, a 33-year veteran of the Guard, received his general's star from Gov. Norm Bangerter and Maj. Gen. John L. Matthews, Utah's adjutant general. The promotion was approved recently by President Reagan and confirmed by the Senate."I have watched the Guard grow from a poor stepchild with hand-me-down equipment and airplanes that were making their last stop before the `boneyard' to having the most modern and effective equipment available," he said. "The entire nature of the Guard has changed so much over the years and I am grateful to have been involved in the changes."
