About 1,000 Egyptian troops have arrived in Saudi Arabia to reinforce security during this year's Moslem Haj (pilgrimage to Mecca), regional Arab diplomats said Tuesday.

Five thousand Egyptian State Security forces are expected in the country, the diplomats said, as part of Saudi Arabia's precautions to avoid a repetition of the demonstrations in Mecca last year.

A total of 402 people, mainly Iranian pilgrims, died in clashes with Saudi troops in July 1987.
