The U.S. Department of Defense spent more than $2 billion in Utah last year, with five counties getting 96 percent of the funds, a Utah Foundation report released Monday said.

The report showed Defense spending in Box Elder County totaled $417 million. Davis County received $682 million, Salt Lake County $590 million, Tooele County $180 million and Weber County $136 million.Federal expenditures include grant awards to state and local governments, individuals and institutions; federal salaries and wages; Social Security, employee retirement and disability programs and other benefits to individuals; federal procurement contracts; and miscellaneous federal outlays.

"Although there was a substantial increase in Defense Department outlays," the report said, "this was largely offset by a decline in non-defense contract awards."
