A police department investigation will be conducted into the Sunday incident in which a Layton police officer's gun went off, wounding him and the man he was trying to arrest, a police spokesman said.
Terry Gardner, a seven-year veteran of the Layton Police Department, was wounded in the left forearm and the man he was struggling with was shot in the neck, police said.Neither was seriously hurt, both being treated at Humana Hospital Davis North and discharged, police said. The man arrested, Jeffrey Castillo, 20, of 2867 Kiesel Ave., Ogden, was then booked into the Davis County Jail for investigation of auto burglary and obstructing an officer, according to a jail booking officer.
According to police, Gardner was dispatched on an auto burglary call at 2:30 a.m. Sunday. When he arrived, he confronted three people, all of whom tried to escape.
Gardner caught one, police said, and during the struggle to subdue him, drew his service weapon. The gun went off, wounding both men. The other two persons involved in the incident apparently escaped.
