A 5-year-old St. George boy drowned Sunday at the Washington Dam, sheriff's deputies said.

James C. Tisdale died at 3:40 p.m. in Dixie Medical Center, about an hour after he fell into a head gate at the dam, 10 miles east of St. George, Deputy Bryan Ririe said.

"He apparently was submerged about 15 minutes before they could find him downstream from where he fell in," Ririe said.

The child was on a family outing at the time of the accident.
