A newspaper reported Monday that Iran recovered the flight recorder from the passenger jet a U.S. Navy warship shot down over the Persian Gulf. Iran denied the report.

The Khaleej Times quoted unidentified salvage experts in Dubai as saying the Iranians recovered the flight recorder from the Iran Air A300 Airbus in the past few days.

But Iran's navy commander said Monday that search teams have so far failed to find the flight recorder, Tehran Radio reported.

Commodore Mohammed Hussein Malekzadegan said in a radio interview monitored in Cyprus that the recorder may have been destroyed when the jetliner was shot down July 3 by a missile fired by the USS Vincennes. Iran said all 290 people aboard were killed.
