Actor Tom Berenger, nominated for an Academy Award for his performance in "Platoon," has contributed $10,000 to his alma mater, the University of Missouri-Columbia's speech and dramatic arts department.

Income from the Tom Berenger Acting Scholarship Fund will be used to establish an annual award for senior theater majors beginning in 1989, said department Chairman Larry Clark."We are honored that Tom appreciates the training he received here and that he wants to help other students get a good start," said Clark.

Berenger's new movie, "Betrayed," also starring Debra Winger, is scheduled for release Aug. 26.
