Novell Inc. of Provo, a computer hardware and software company, reported sales of $53.7 million in the quarter ending Jan. 30 compared with $34.5 million in the same period a year ago, a 56 percent increase.

Raymond J. Noorda, president and chief executive officer, said net income in the same quarter was $5.4 million or 20 cents per share, compared with $4.2 million or 17 cents per share in the same period a year ago.He said the company's performance in the quarter was "in line with previously announced expectations as compared with record sales and earnings in the previous sequential quarter."

Noorda said software products accounted for 55 percent of the sales in the quarter ending Jan. 30, compared to 45 percent for the entire fiscal year 1987. "Recent company statements have indicated that hardware revenues will continue to increase, but software revenues will be a larger percentage of total revenues," Noorda said.
