American Fork has reason to really whoop it up at this year's Steel Days activities. Geneva Steel has reopened its plant and become a part of the city's annual event.
Steel Days activities begin Saturday and will end July 16 with a variety show featuring Lee Fugal with his ragtime piano and musical comedy act. A drawing for a one-week trip to Hawaii or Alaska paid for by Geneva Steel will be held at the variety show.The show, at American Fork High School, will end with fireworks on the school's football field.
The Mammoth Parade and the Electrocardio-Run will also cap off the week's events July 16. The parade starts at 10 a.m. at the Smith's Food King parking lot and will continue down Main Street to the Fred Meyer parking lot.
The 5.5-mile Electrocardio-Run, sponsored by American Fork Hospital, begins at 7 a.m. in the Alpine City Park and will end at the hospital. Registration begins at 6:15 a.m. Those who pay the $6 registration fee will get a scrub shirt.
Those people who aren't up to running 5.5 miles can choose The Midget One Mile Run, which starts at 8:30 a.m. at the hospital. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. Winners in both races will receive trophies in their respective division.
Miss American Fork, to be selected July 9, will reign over Steel Days activities. The Queen Pageant is at 8 p.m. at American Fork Junior High School.
The City of Fun Carnival will be in Robinson Park from July 14 to July 16. Other Steel Days activities include horse racing; a triathlon; a golf, racquetball, tennis, softball and horseshoe tournament; and an art, flower and 4-H fashion show and program. There will also be reduced swimming rates for Steel Days participants, a community street dance at 8:30 p.m. July 15 and a chuck wagon dinner July 15 and 16 at the race track.
"The event is for community togetherness and just to have a good time," said Diana England, committee co-chairwoman.
Variety Show tickets are available at Christensen's and Smith's Food King in American Fork and from any member of the city's Lions Club. Discount carnival tickets are also available at a number of stores in American Fork.
