Bountiful residents and those who need sewer hookups in the city will pay more for those services after the Bountiful City Council approved a sewer rate increase Wednesday night.

Passing along a rate increase approved by the South Davis Sewer District board, council members voted to boost monthly residential rates $3 and new connection fees to $600, a $250 increase. The increased monthly charges and connection fee will finance a $13 million sewer plant expansion, district director Dal Wayment told the council."The actual capital dollar cost for a new hookup is actually between $800 to $900," Wayment said, noting the charge was a compromise between social and economic conditions in the area.

In other action, the council agreed to pay 14.7 percent of a consultant's fee to study a new emergency phone system for Layton, Clearfield and Davis County. The council also approved a joint operating agreement between the city and Utah Power & Light for the use of an electrical substation.
