Team USA was off to an impressive start on its road to the Olympics in Seoul as it blasted the Taiwan national baseball team 17-7 in an exhibition game at Wigle Field.

The red, white and blue hit three home runs during the game Thursday, including two that sailed so far into the darkness no one could estimate the distance traveled. Team USA had 22 hits, eight for extra bases. Taiwan had its share, knocking five doubles out of its nine hits.

Ty Griffin, Team USA's leading hitter, had four hits during the four innings he played.

First baseman Tino Martinez, summoned from the bench, connected on a run-scoring single in the fifth and added a long two-run homer in the eighth.

Head coach Mark Marquess said the best is still to come.
