Kwal-Howells of Salt Lake City, whose principal business is manufacturing and marketing architectural paints and the distribution of industrial paints, wallcoverings, sundries and spray equipment, has been acquired by Williams Holdings Inc., a London-based holding company of Standard Brands.

Kwal and Howells merged in 1987 and sales that year totaled $25 million, according to Jerry Howells, president and chief executive officer of Kwal-Howells. Howells will remain as the chief executive officer for the company.Howard P. Dyer, president of Williams Holdings Inc., said Kwal-Howells will ideally fit into the company's existing regional paint business in California, Washington and British Columbia.

Last year, Williams Holdings acquired the west coast regional paint businesses of Frazee Industries in San Diego.
