Reader comments: Reader comments: FLDS mothers say Texas officials lied to them

Danielle | 1:40 a.m. Apr. 15, 2008
A blanket order to take ALL of the children out of a community based on one allegation is ludicrous! This should have been handled on a case by case basis BEFORE the uprooting of every home in the community. PEOPLE lets remember that the majority of our information has been from the media looking for a sensational story, and thier source is the TEXAS officials which have been historically known for thier prejudice, and "shoot first, ask later tactics". I refuse to demonize an entire sect of people based on a frenzied "witch hunt"! The warrant was incredibly broad, based on phantom evidence that they have refused to disclose. Officials only validated the fear and suspicion of the families in taking the mothers away. What a waisted opportunity to build trust and dialogue with the INDIVIDUALS that truly needed intervention.
In Hopes for a Caring Approach | 2:38 a.m. Apr. 15, 2008
This was very disturbing to watch, but important... thank you for doing this interview... it was apparent in watching her explaining the trust that she had previously expressed to her children that she believed that cooperation was the best approach to the situation... apparently, she had no idea that the children would be taken away & was trying to help them to deal with the situation in a positive manner... what would have been wrong with letting her say goodbye to them? ... I would strongly hope that the decision-makers in this situation could always take into conscious consideration the bond that exists between children & their mothers... it can be traumatic to abruptly "cut all ties"... I believe that this would really be a very cruel approach considering the bond that evidently clearly does exist... perhaps in some cases (especially in cases where abuse is not substantiated or when children express trauma from being separated from their families) the children could be returned & social workers could be brought in to monitor... certainly, each case should be looked at individually.

CPS USES LIES AND INTIMIDATION EVERYDAY THEY WANT YOUR KIDS FOR THE MONEY. THEY DONT EVEN HAVE THE GIRL THAT THEY SAID STARTED THIS . I thought that this was still AMERICAN. If these woman and kids are the victims why are they being punished ?

Law abiding citizens who marry their kids at 13? Must have missed that somewhere in the statutory rape precedents...
Guy Murray | 6:03 a.m. Apr. 15, 2008
Hear wrenching. Just unbelievable. Who are these people to treat others this way?
Anonymous | 6:23 a.m. Apr. 15, 2008
i am from ohio and i watched this video and being a mother of three children i can feel her pain. Also, being a christian and looking at this at a religous point of view this is what these people have lived and thought for years(and that it's okay)They're deceived by one man. But, little do they know that the bible say's, "Put your trust in no man." I'am glad that Texas police did what they did. To me this was a start to a cult and poor little children are stuck in the middle thinking this is right. Texas saved many little life's that day. Sure they might not understand what's happened right now, but they have a hope in the future to understand what happened was the best thing for them.

Really shocking. The actions of the authorities remind me of the Soviet Union in the 1930's.
Anonymous | 7:57 a.m. Apr. 15, 2008
Give these women their children back! The authorities have been trying for years to pull something like this. It is sad and unfair. It truly is a "witch hunt" case. The media reports what they would like to hype and the rest of us believe like unthoughtful sheep. Is this America?
John | 9:02 a.m. Apr. 15, 2008
Is this America? If this happened in the projects where childern are being exposed to drugs, violence and sex daily,we would have riots in the streets. For the second time in Texas, in the name of saving the children from a religon that doesn't fit the norm ( who will be named a cult next),the Government has over stepped it authority. They are U.S. citizens and are protecited under the constitution or are they? It seems that the children of illeagal's have more rights than do our citizens.Shame on US for allowing the seperation of brothers and sisters to be taken from their mothers, and being placed in a broken state system.

It's heart breaking and I feel bad for all of these people!! I believe they are all brain washed and that marrying young girls to older men is something that has to be stopped but I believe that they are basically good people with good intentions and they shouldn't be hearded around like a bunch of sheep and mother's seperated from their children!! Doesn't this government ever think things out before they step in and make bumbling fools of themselves?? It doesn't feel like a humane or American or Christian way to treat people!! This supposed missing 16 year old girl is probably non existant and probably a prank call from an anti polygamy group...it's not that hard to trace calls...maybe they should of checked that out before disrupting the lives of all these families!
Anonymous | 10:08 a.m. Apr. 15, 2008
Having grown up in a strange cult-like situation, I can say that tho it may not be optimal, it's much harmful to take a child away from their surroundings and be thrown into strangers hands. Our foster care system is seriously flawed and these mothers obviously care for their children. Great video.
thetruth | 10:25 a.m. Apr. 15, 2008
The sympathy from deseret news towards these people is amazing. Did they run a similar feature when David Koresh and his cult were raided? It is just strange. No, it is not an ideal situation when kids are taken from parents. However, it is the job of the government to protect all people, including kids. In this case, the lifestyle seems innocent with the long dresses and beehive hair, but it is a twisted cult. These kids will never have a chance. They will be brainwashed and never have an opportunity to pursue a full and enriching life if they were to stay on that ranch.
Katie | 10:35 a.m. Apr. 15, 2008
As I watched this video, I had disturbing visions of Jewish women and children, being told to separate into groups - lied to that they would be together again. I did not believe that something like this could happen in America. I do not share the beliefs of the FLDS people - however this is America - and this should never have happened. As citizens we should do all that we can to help make this right. If there is abuse going on, find it. I was surprised to find that the Texas Authorities acted in such angry haste - and yet they still haven't found the caller that cried wolf, I mean abuse. I do believe that this group needs help, but this certainly didn't help any of them feel that they could be safe or trust anyone on the "outside". Shame on Texas. And, as for the absolute idiot from Texas that made the comment that all of the polygamists be sent back to Utah with the rest of their breed, I beg you to educate yourself. Not all in Utah are Mormon, and the Mormons don't believe in plural wives. I live among them - I know!!!
Are You Kidding? | 11:49 a.m. Apr. 15, 2008
Who is right? All are. The children have done nothing wrong and are being punished by being taken away from their mothers. The mothers just want to protect their children, but they were part of the problem by having children in illegal plural marriage families. This is sad because many of them know nothing different in their entire life. It is their religion, even though the plural marriages are against the law, they think they are doing right. Unfortunately, there are child victims involved in the darker side of the practice. Underage children are married and taken as sex partners by older men. Probably some pedophiles in the group, definitely illegal and wrong. But why has it been allowed for so many years and let grow to the size that the community is today? Why didn't the government put a stop to it before now? If you are going to look the other way for so long, you are going to make the problems that much worse when you decide it is time to take action. That is what the government is guilty of. The government is also guilty of severe insensitivity towards the victims, the mothers and children!
Always Focusing On Themselves | 11:59 a.m. Apr. 15, 2008
These women have clearly been given scripts and told what to say. When they are asked questions, they have pat, prepared answers, generally refusing to admit that child molestation occurs but not denying it either. They say "It is about the children," but they refuse to discuss children who are being molested in "spiritual" marriages at the age of 13, 14 and 15.

They can cry through their scripts all they want, but we need to remember the children crying as they are raped by old men.
chris | 12:00 p.m. Apr. 15, 2008
This is unbearable, where do we live some facist state. Where is one bit of concrete evidence that abuse took place? Where is the 16 year old that called in? The rights of US citizens have been trampled. I AM NOT one of them nor do I believe in their ideas, but I am disgusted with the state of Texas and the Federal government for letting this abuse of power happen. Who is next, a 13year old caused a state wide search yesterday by phoning in a bogus kidnapping. Texas over reaching again, remember WACO?
To Anonymous | 12:47 p.m. Apr. 15, 2008
Too many anonymous posters on here. You can't even keep your story straight.

Go CPS and DPS in Texas. It was long overdue.
give me a break | 2:12 p.m. Apr. 15, 2008
two minutes of sobbing but not a single actual tear

you bleeding hearts posting on here are pretty gullible

propoganda

I feel sorry for these children, where ever they end up
Anonymous | 2:21 p.m. Apr. 15, 2008
So we're supposed to feel sorry for people breaking the law? You know those women were crying because they can't remember which children are theirs.
KerBear | 2:41 p.m. Apr. 15, 2008
A RESPONSE TO thetruth's COMMENT: "These kids will never have a chance. They will be brainwashed and never have an opportunity to pursue a full and enriching life if they were to stay on that ranch."

Who is to say that the "outside world" has so much more to offer? Are our children not brainwashed? Perhaps these kids need Playstations with violent games, to see sexual advertisements 100x/day, and need to learn to be angry and obstinate. I am not so sure...

Just because someone is different does not make them bad. People should have the right to raise their children however they want to. I agree that 14 year olds should not be forced to marry, but to say that ALL 416 kids are abused is rediculous. Abused how?

Imagine going through your life thinking that you were doing everything God told you to, living righteously, and then suddenly having the government come in and rip your children from your arms.

Where is the evidence?
CA | 2:53 p.m. Apr. 15, 2008
This is a child abuse case and not a religious case. The childen should be removed if their mothers can't tell what is or is not abuse and if they aided the abuse.
NY Mom | 7:06 p.m. Apr. 15, 2008
Where are all the women's group that stand up for women's rights? If these women wanted abortions or norplant, the story would be different.
JohnF | 9:08 p.m. Apr. 15, 2008
What an excellent video, letting the subject tell the story without reporter interpretation. The whole story seems to be an overreaction to those who are different. Why is America so intolerant? Why does everyone have to march in line? Let those kids stay with their mothers while things get sorted out. Why do officials always pursue the easy cases but let the tough criminals back on the street again?
Melinda | 10:10 p.m. Apr. 15, 2008
The RLDS are living an old Biblical principle that Abraham and Moses and many other greats did. That should not make them a target for a bogus raid and bigotry.

1. Did they trace the cell phone of the alleged 16 year old caller to verify the truthfulness of the call? NO. The caller claimed she was "married to a 50 year old man...funny the man - has not stepped foot in TX. So that alone should have put the brakes on the TANK that rolled into the compound.
This is not WACO. To save face the authorities- insinuate "that the children show 'signs of physical and sexual abuse." So far there has been NO proof. What about the trauma of foster care? And swat teams, and being taken from their families?

2. What where Baptist Church buses doing carting the children off? What happened to "separation of Church and state?"

3. In America you are INNOCENT until proven GUIlTY. How has this travisty happened? No one believes ALL 416 children have been abused. The children looked clean and neat, and well cared for. Let there be a cry across the land to return those children to their families!
Anonymous | 4:12 p.m. Apr. 16, 2008
Children under CPS are 5 times more likely to be abuse than in the general polulation. Investigate this on the enternet. It is true. The state of Texas will pay for the violation of the rights of these people. I am now ashamed to have been born in that miserable state. You so called Christians should also be ashamed. You shame the name of Christ.
NaidaSativa | 4:24 p.m. Apr. 20, 2008
Where are the TEARS?!!!!!!!!! They are sooooo FAKE!
A Dad | 9:56 p.m. Apr. 26, 2008
Tears? I bet these mothers have cried so much they do not have any tears left.

Imagine if this country went majority Islamic. And they took all children away from Christians. Is it that different? This is not the way to build a country. I guess we are all bigots at some level. I never thought I would see the day where Christian busses were sent to take the children away from mothers of another opposing Christian faith in the name of governmental protection. I do not agree with this faith. Hell, I do not agree with most faiths. But, I respect everyone?s freedom religion.
Alana | 6:15 p.m. Apr. 29, 2008
They aren't Christians. But they do have rights, and before CPS removes children, there should be proof. I doubt there is a parent in this land who does not, on some level, fear CPS.

However, if a person or a group conscientiously lives outside of the law (and practices polygamy, or underage marriage, for instance), then that person/group must be at all times prepared to submit to the consequences of being outside the law, and go to jail.

Seems like it would have been more effective to round o up the MEN. Why punish the victims?
Gramzi | 7:27 p.m. May. 5, 2008
WHO aren't Christians?!? The teachings of Christ were about love and forgiveness!! Looks to me like these folks are more Christian than lots who have posted here. Now, once again, lest we forget~ THIS IS AMERICA WHERE PEOPLE ARE INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY. There has been not one iota of evidence presented AND not one required judicial process adhered to!!! When are the Sheeple of America going to respond to this baaaaad situation. Can you say CONSTITUTION?????
New Mexico | 11:58 a.m. May. 9, 2008
I watched this video several times, and NEVER saw one actual tear from Marie. Someone needs to clue her in that what she is propagating is wrong and it is illegal.....both to allow your underage daughters to partake in illegal sexual activities, and to literally throw your sons out into the world with no education, money, or support. Religion is one thing, and criminal abuse is entirely another. Wake up Marie.
Jewell | 3:12 p.m. May. 12, 2008
I say RETURN the children to their mothers. Whether you acually see tears or not is NOT the issue here! And there's NO PROOF OF ABUSE in the Families NO Cause of Action should've been taken against them. Just heresay and a big desire to do another WACO. You've got to shed tears for her pain and her loss. I say there needs to be a great cry of mothers to reach out and demand this kind of actions of the CPS to end NOW! Remember the Jewish mothers, Remember the illiegle immigrants mothers, remember WACO, Remember the Charokee mothers of this land. The cry of the innocent children and mothers have gone up to heaven. The Creator of heaven and earth, He hears and will repay the wrongdoers in His time.
Sexual Addiction Recovery | 10:25 p.m. May. 29, 2008
There are resources online for people looking to recover from sexual addiction. An addiction of this nature is often the result of childhood abuse and very hard to diagnose, even in ourselves. Compulsive sexual acting out, often the core of polygymous communities, is not issue to handled by the justice system, but rather in company of people who share the same experiences and seek to heal their wounds and live healthy lives. 50 year olds marrying teenagers indicates to me a pretty clear case of serious sexual and relational dysfunction. The women in this video are deeply enmeshed and cannot see the full picture, namely the costs and effects of their choices on their children and on the world. I pray for all of us that we find courage within ourselves to find the recovery we need from anything that inhibits good decision making and wholesome living. For me to heal my child abuse, and the resultant behaviors I did in my adult life, I found 12 step programs that focus on sexual addiction. Its a beautiful journey back to wholeness. We break the cycle by starting with ourselves. Take what you like and leave the rest.
