"A Democrat will not win the 3rd district seat. Karen Allen's fundraising success was driven by anti-Chaffetz sentiment. Now that he's out of the picture she will fade into oblivion. And no other Democrat has a prayer." -DonO

"Any democrat that believes that this in any way would help them win the Utah 3rd CD seat is delusional. The republican convention and primary system will decide who will represent the Utah 3rd CD. The democrats are not a factor." -Brer Rabbit

I wouldn't be quite so certain about that.

Jim Matheson would probably win that seat, but I doubt that he is interested; I suspect he has bigger fish to fry...

A few other Democrats who might also have a realistic shot at winning the seat include Ben McAdams, Peter Corroon, Scott Howell, and *maybe* a few others (Sam Granato?, Luz Robles Escamilla?, Jani Iwamoto?, Brian King?); though these don't have quite as much name recognition, which would probably be a liability.

I would be interested to know what Donald Trump said to Jason Chaffetz in their private meeting in the Oval Office a few weeks ago.

I think there is more to this story...MUCH more...

It's sad that people are throwing such venom toward a man that by all accounts went to Washington to change the way things were done, champion term limits, and uphold the rule of law. Then he proves he was really for term limits by self-imposing the limits he touts. In addition, he lists his family and wanting to spend time with them as the main reason for leaving.

The sad thing is that many Americans, mostly progressives, see all that is good as bad and vice-versa.

Any democrat that believes that this in any way would help them win the Utah 3rd CD seat is delusional. The republican convention and primary system will decide who will represent the Utah 3rd CD. The democrats are not a factor.

Due to the liberal policies of the Democratic Party, such as abortion there are zero elected political officials in the 3rd CD, and this is not going to change anytime soon. In fact there are no democrats elected to political office out side of the North half of Salt Lake County in the entire state. This is not going to change as long as the Utah Democrats cling to the ideology of their national party.

    Two thoughts:

A Democrat will not win the 3rd district seat. Karen Allen's fundraising success was driven by anti-Chaffetz sentiment. Now that he's out of the picture she will fade into oblivion. And no other Democrat has a prayer.

Chaffetz wants to run for governor in 2020 but he has a lot of holes to fill if he's to have a ghost of a chance. His decision not to run in 2018 was largely fueled by the knowledge that if he stayed his approval ratings would continue to plummet. He loves the trappings and attention of public office but I think he's finished.

Praise for Chaffetz' "impending departure" seems a bit premature. He's still got 18 months left in his term--18 months of serving his constituents, and 18 months of heading the house committee on oversight and government reform.

(Has Chaffetz held even one hearing on Trump's conflicts of interest, as opposed to the constant Benghazi! Benghazi! Benghazi! drum-beating?)

If Chaffetz isn't going to do his job, he owes it to his constituents to resign today. If he keeps showing up to work but doesn't do his job, we should be asking who he's really working for.

I'm a lifelong GOP voter. Chaffetz is one of the most spineless congressmen ever and I'm ashamed to say he's from Utah and LDS. He's been Trump's lapdog ever since Trump invited him to the WH and told him to back off investigations in trade for reverting Bears Ears and other public lands to the oil/gas interests. Trump has him scared which is Chaffetz has avoided investigating Trump's huge illegal conflicts of interest. That's why Jason is quitting.

So sad and incomprehensible that any people in Utah would be fooled by this chicanery.

I don't understand people saying Jason was "too much about self promotion". When some Congressman is in front of a lot of news cameras, it's usually because they are a committee chairman of some important committee - like the Oversight Committee. The news people WANT to hear from them. Jason has done an excellent job as the Chairman of the Oversight Committee. If you think he hasn't, then you have not been following what has really gone on behind the scenes. And, yes, he is and has been investigating everything about Trump. Not everything those committees do gets into the news. I applaud his work - he represented Utah exactly as we asked him to.

It is hard to understand why any person in their right mind would want to serve in a public office because of the hatred and venom that spews from many. It is sad that we as Americans can not look past our petty differences and try to do what is best for OUR country. Well here is one American who is going to do what I can in my personal life and in my family life and local community to try and help do what is best for OUR country, instead of just complaining and pointing a finger.

The look on his face when the Planned Parenthood lady nailed him on his visual aid was priceless and will remain his lasting legacy. If you didn't like what this guy stood for, that was his Dan Quayle telling the kid he misspelled potato (e) moment.

The Democrats may be cheering, yet they won't win that seat. They won't even come close. Perhaps they think that their despicable behavior at the meeting at Brighton High is what ran Jason out. Not hardly.

What a wonderful job Jason Chaffetz has done to be bold and speak out against the atrocities that have hampered our federal government for the last 8 years. I am sad to see such a strong voice gone, but I think there are other opportunities on the horizon for him. He is too smart and wise to sit idle very long.

Thank you from all of us who value your principles, character, and leadership!

Jason Chaffetz has been everything good I imagined he would be when I first voted him into office. He is a class act. I hope he knows that most of Utah residents are grateful for his service. When the time is right Jason come back and we'll vote you into office again. We have that much confidence in you. Good luck with your year ahead and your future.

Great job Jason. The good guys will miss you. The perpetual whiners will miss you too.

Plenty of excellent replacements from Curtis to Deidre. 3rd District folks are smart and always ignore the whiner's smoke screens.

I'll be sending Rep Chaffitz's office a note of thanks for his amazing service. Fortunately we have many freedom-loving citizens in Utah willing to act as our champions in DC against those willing to trade our freedom for their power.
I'm disappointed, but not surprised, that this article spent so much time quoting irrelevant politicos. Asking a Dem in Utah for their opinion is like asking United Airlines for advice on customer service. Useless and probably counter-productive.

"Republicans hailed his work in Congress....."

What work in Congress? Chaffetz has been notoriously ineffective, if you measure the number of bills proposed and passed. True, he managed to get himself on the powerful Oversight Committee - where he has wholly abused his power.

I have no idea what Republicans are talking about.

Happy to see him go as I do not feel he has been a very good rep for Utah. I think sometimes house reps forget they represent the people in their state not their political party

Chaffetz is and has been an embarrassment to the state of utah ever since he took office. Never saw a camera or mic. he didn't love. After his despicable flip flop on Trump support, you know, "how could I look my daughter in the eye", and the "you shouldn't own a IPhone if you can't afford health care coverage" gaffe, his reception at his town hall meeting and Kathryn breathing down his neck, me thinks Jason see's the writing on the wall!

Not to worry folks, all the Pubs have to do is throw someone in the pile with and R behind their name and the sheep will vote for them.

At least Chaffetz will not be around to continue the embarrassment.

No word on how he's dealing with "looking his daughter in the face" after saying he could never support Trump, but then did, bigly?
