Chicken, you may want to review the SEC non-conference schedules before pointing
fingers. Florida hasn't played a non-conferernce game outside of the
sunshine state in over 30 years. Get your facts straght. As far as
"venturing into SEC territory"; the last time Utah did that they thumped
an 11-1 Alabama team in their own back yard. SEC teams don't have the guts
to leave home. Tennesee and LSU do once in a while; but the others don't
dare leave the south. Reference Tennessee's last trip to Oregon: a 54-19
beat down in 2013. slywalkerExcuses are weak sauce but
very par for the course for fans like your self. Anything, and I mean anything
but give Utah credit. Sad and pathetic, but absolutely true. I love how that
Alabama win is quickly swept under the rug, just like the last 4 times Utah beat
I think the U is going to have a break through year this year ...perhaps 8-4 or
Lots of comments from byu fans who watched the game. Always welcome in the
discussion...thanks for tuning in and supporting the Pac-12.
There can be no more worthy opponent to replace the Utes' traditional
rivalries for the sake of building the program than the Idaho State University
Well : asu is not that good the defense is just bad ; wsu yea its a win they
again have no defense and no run game ;ucla maybe we always play them tough

@taylormade1fake punt call from your own 20 when you are up 35-7
against an 8 man football team . WOW!-----------------Up
18 points at 5:41 in the 4th quarter, BYU was still running the "Go Fast, Go
Hard, and Go Short" to score.Hill went 4/4 for 62 yards against
UConn's 3rd string and scored a meaningless TD in less than 1.5 minutes.
Two for FlinchingI understand those sentiments or expectations to a
certain extent, but again I hope the Utes do well. I am a football coach and
fan and know many coaches across the state. I root for all teams. I hope the
Utes get it together. When the Utes first went into the PAC-12 there was talk
of Rose Bowl and I thought that was just fine, I think shooting for the stars
and not getting there is better than going for the goal of being bowl eligible
and then not making it. There were some good things about the game
itself but also many concerning things as well.
Was not particularly impressed with Travis Wilson's play in the first half.
He looked a little herky-jerky out there, but he is obviously rusty. The OL is
not as strong as last year, nor is the DL. The CBs are going to be burned badly
this year by speed, if they don't improve. Blechen did not look like he
wanted any contact. The OL and DL need to improve their strength and push at
the line. The backers did a pretty good job. But, having said all of
that, the special teams are continuing their impressive run over the past two
years; all aspects of it. They did not want any injuries from this game and I
don't believe they had any...Scott and Dre' Anderson are going to be
difficult to handle, if the Ol can give Wilson some time.Cox was
impressive and over time, may even become the backup QB.Good win.
Beat the Dogs...!!
@Big 12 Call Yet?...I hope we stop playing any mid major soon...Sorry to disappoint you but they agreed to play BYU again starting 2016.Utes fans need to get over 1 thing...Utah will play at least 1 opponent
like ISUevery season from now on to offset with the tough PAC-12
schedule.2016: BYU and Southern Utah2017: BYU and North Dakota2018: Northern Illinois and BYU2019: Northern Illinois and ISU
@skywalker...There will be a bowl game at the end of the season:1)
Utes has at least 2 good/capable QB in Travis and Kendal.2) Good offensive
still players3) Good defense4) Good special team
@Uteology:"Right! Like I said there are less PAC-12 stickers in
East Salt Lake then the number of BYU fans on PAC-12 bandwagons."Um... what? Apparently that's supposed to mean something?"Washington State just lost at home to a team that was ranked #88
(compared to #80 Colorado), yet you have Utah "Maybe" winning at
home."Washington State isn't one of the Pac-12's
stronger programs. Hence the "Maybe" for your Utes--again, a team with
plenty of question marks. Colorado looks OK, and I just don't see the Utes
beating the Buffs in Boulder."And your questioning my
predictions? Priceless!"Why, of course. When the predictions are
highly questionable to begin with, might as well question them. Kinda how it
@ Mister JA lot of teams do stripe the stadium promotions. WVU,
Illinios, Iowa, Arkansas, Indiana, Oklahoma, Boise, and oh yeah, even BYU tried
Striping the stadium? Really? How Jr High. Did they pass out candy canes before
the game too?
@ Old But Not Stupid"I'm sure this will be viewed as a
great victory along the Wasatch front by "Utah Men"You'll be happy to know that not a single Utah fan has said anything
close to that. Ute fans understand this game was a scheduled win, and coming
out the game the attitude has been optimism for the O and a little concern for
the D. The OOC jab was weak considering the rest of the schedule consists of
the defending MWC champs and a game in the Big House. It's also weird
seeing OOC talk from a UCLA fan, considering they play Virginia and Memphis.
Have you heard what they say about throwing stones from a glass house?
My bad *paraphernalia
Haven't had time to read the 49 or so prior comments, so take this as a
fresh perspective and whatever it is worth. From the article: "Utah coach Kyle Whittingham opted to address many of the negatives early
in his remarks.Whittingham didn’t think the Utes were physical
enough on either side of the line of scrimmage. He also felt they gave up too
many rushing yards (179) and didn’t get enough push on the offensive
line. The two biggest negatives, Whittingham explained, were a lack of
takeaways (none on defense) and a turnover on offense (a fumble), plus the line
of scrimmage."I know ISU was on all the paraphenalia, but after
the first quarter of play I swear I saw players from Pocatello Community College
when "white" was on offense and players from Pocatello High School when
"white" was on defense or special teams.Nonetheless,
I'm sure this will be viewed as a great victory along the Wasatch front by
"Utah Men" or whatever the PC term is now in the Ute song; but this
reminds me of the preseason OOC schedule for Utah basketball last year.
@ eagleUtah is aspiring for something higher than 7-5. The
predictions of 6-6 or 7-5 in the regular season are the optimistic, yet
realistic goals based on the schedule and where Utah currently is as a team.
Well....Phoenix, AZHey again, Uteology—a BYU fan jumping
on ASU’s bandwagon? No, no, no. Just a fan of both teams. --------------Right! Like I said there are less PAC-12 stickers
in East Salt Lake then the number of BYU fans on PAC-12 bandwagons.Washington State just lost at home to a team that was ranked #88 (compared to
#80 Colorado), yet you have Utah "Maybe" winning at home. And your questioning my predictions? Priceless! If ASU might of
played their B game but Utah played with a injured QB whose completion
percentage dropped from %62 before injuring is passing hand to %32 afterwards.
Lucky for you that you played against 10 players.
Two for Flinching:I guess perhaps maybe you saw that I was from
Provo assuming that I was a BYU fan or not a Ute fan. I'm just
a sports fan and coach. And for me, on my standards of excellence, 7-5
isn't it. If it is for the Utes, then I would say this is a sad thing,
regardless of competition. I don't think Coach Whittingham nor Chris Hill
or anybody that embraced going to the PAC-12 said, let's do this and maybe
we'll finish 7-5 and go to a low level bowl. I think they have high
aspirations.But as I have made a prediction, I would say this, I
don't think Utah even gets to 7-5 or 6-6. My initial prediction was three
wins but I could see up to five. I guess five wins would be a "good"
season and if they get up seven I guess Ute fans could call this remarkable. As for me, one who supports Utah and wants them to do well, I will hope
that the program shoots for higher heights than 7-5.
killarneyAgain, it's a read play. If it's there great, if
not, Hackett will pin them on the 2 yard line. It's all good.Love all those concerned about the Utes. The game tonight in Conn
should be a concern though.... I can just hear the excuses now after the
loss....We didn't sleep in our own bedsIt rained too
hardWe didn't have all our skill players:0
I didn't get to see the game. Did Whitt call for an onsides kick when the
Utes went up by forty?-----No. ISU's coach
didn't make any ridiculous, insulting guarantees.
Hey again, Uteology—a BYU fan jumping on ASU’s bandwagon? No, no,
no. Just a fan of both teams. That happens. Keeping it real, ASU would beat the
Cougs this year, too. It’d be competitive, but we’d still win.Just weird, all the 7-5 talk on here. You, for one, seem to think a huge
upset in The Big House is already in the bag? You think your D, which even your
fellow Ute fans say has more than a few holes, will be able to stop Sean Mannion
and the Beavers--in Corvallis? Maybe the Mildcats at your place. Maybe. Nothing
doing at ours--no let-down again, like last year. But hey, even our B-game was
good enough to win.Not seeing much other hope for ya, sorry. From
where I sit, still 3-9 or 4-8. Just being real. But all you 7-5 folks, keep on
talking the happy talk and being the Little Engine That Could. We’ll play
the games and see what happens.
"Did Whitt call for an onsides kick when the Utes went up by forty?"gchris:No, they weren't playing Joe Glenn's team,
which I believe this year is the South Dakota Coyotes. I wonder if he's
still guaranteeing victories?
PacUtes"...we know one thing for sure. There will be a bowl game
at the end of the season for the Utes."Based on what, a
"big" win over a team that just lost their 46th straight road game?
utahcountyute"Hackett has the option when they run that rugby
style formation to run. It worked out perfectly..."against Idaho
State, but now the Utes have exposed that to Fresno St, Michigan and every other
team Utah plays this season. Now future opponents will have that play
scouted and the next time the Utes try it, it could blow up in Utah's face.
I didn't realize they played last night... So many other things that were
more important. Congrats on a win. Realistically there won't
be very many this year.
b12"I hope we stop playing any mid major soon.P5
need to stay with their own kind and ONLY play other P5"Why are
you so anxious to see the demise of Utah football? With 6 or 7 P5
road games and no Big Sky gimme at home, the chances of the Utes ever qualifying
for another bowl game would be slim to non-existent.
Coach Whit summed it up nicely when he said they didn't really learn much
from this game. Next week will be a better measuring stick of how good or bad
this team is. Nate Orchard is a "BEAST"! Unfortunately when the 2nd
team is on the field it is a huge drop off on the D front.
Down under,I want to be there when you tell Nate Orchard that
he's nothing special.
@ taylormade1Utah didn't call a fake punt. It was a rugby
punt, and it's a read play. If Hackett has room to run, he takes it.
Otherwise he will kick it away. Hackett read it perfectly and it turned out to
be a great play. Also, it happened early in the third quarter. Why is that
play an issue for BYU fans?
gchrisHackett has the option when they run that rugby style
formation to run. It worked out perfectly for him to follow those massive bodies
down the sideline to get the 1st down. Great play from the future All American.
Furthermore, if you can take advantage of the situation and practice that play
on the likes of ISU, you do it.All in all, a lack luster performance
by the D. Clay is for real, the O looked better but it was ISU. The Utes will
need to clean things up for FSU next week and the rest of this schedule. Whit
and Sitake will make the adjustments no doubt.Go Utes!
D was soft, especially the d-backs. The d-line was nothing special. Gonna be
a long season starting next week. Enjoy one of the few, if not the only win
this year. When the ISU receivers can run their weak routes and the d-backs
can't keep up u are in trouble.
fake punt call from your own 20 when you are up 35-7 against an 8 man football
team . WOW!
WOW, what an IMPRESSIVE win over possibly the worst team in college football. I
can;t believe that they let ISU score points. I could not find the game
anywhere but is sounds like the defense was weak at best.Well, the
utes got their lone win of the year. Congrats.
I hope we stop playing any mid major soon.P5 need to stay with their
own kind and ONLY play other P5
Boy oh boy, know I know the Utes are going to the Rose Bowl! And playing for the
National Championship! Boy it must be wonderful playing such powerful teams
knowing you can walk all over them. The only thing that I am surprised at is
there was no on side kick just to prove they could do anything they wanted!
Drink up and enjoy. After this the well starts running dry, and then it's
HOME for the Holidays! I love your PAC 12 membership.
I didn't get to see the game. Did Whitt call for an onsides kick when the
Utes went up by forty?
Are they good for LV Bowl game?Holiday Bowl?Rose Bowl?Don't know. But we know one thing for sure. There will be a
bowl game at the end of the season for the Utes.Stay tuned.
@Well....Cougar fan that's jumped on ASU's bandwagonUtah
has a good chance of going starting at least 3-1 (ISU, Fresno, MI, WSU) and
winning the last two (UA, Colorado). Then need to find one win against the rest
to go 7-5.You are aware that it wasn't as much as ASU winning
last year as Utah chocking away a 12 point lead in the 4th quarter. All year we
had won when leading by double digits in the 4th, except ASU.
@1991Yeah I totally agree. Like I said, I'm very disappointed
and hope that Sitaki can light a fire under the D because if not, it will be a
Well...your picks of 8 straight losses is excessive. Looking at the schedule, I
thought Utah would be fortunate to win 6 this year. The middle of that schedule
is brutal, but Arizona is not as good as last year and Colorado is still not
very good either. Whittingham said the goal was to get to a bowl game. OSU is
not a team who has ever dominated Utah, so you chalk that one up as an automatic
loss and I disagree. Arizona and Colorado are certainly winnable
games. If they get those 3 and the others you list as W's, they get to 6
wins. ASU only returns 2 starters on defense, so I see them potentially taking a
step back this year. USC is also having all kinds of internal problems. There
are no guarantees in this conference. Utah played all but 3 Pac 12 games last
year down to the wire. A play here or there and they would have made a bowl
game. Just a few more plays this year and they may get there.
The utes pull off the upset... Congrats... That makes them 1-0... The over/under
is 3 wins (3-9)... I have the "under" and expect to make lots of money
AGAIN this year.
Usually the defense is ahead of the offense under Whittingham early in the year.
The offensive wasn't entirely explosive, but showed signs of being much
improved. The special teams were appear to be better than last year,
We couldn't kick the ball into the end zone last year, let alone out of the
end zone. Phillips kicked them out of the end zone tonight. Tonga is a very
solid tight end and the receivers and running backs are much deeper too. I expect the defense to play better by the time they play Fresno. Sitake
and Whit will make adjustments in the scheme. There is talent on the front 7,
but as has been stated, the biggest concern is the cornerbacks. The Utes look
very vulernable there right now.
@WellWishful thinking there. There are four losses I would say are
likely if not certain but the rest are maybes with a few more probable checks in
the Yes category. 6 wins will happen.
A very good first game. Wilson looked sharp, the backup QB's each bring
their own unique skill sets, the running back-by-committee approach looks solid,
and Dres still is one of the best wide receivers in the country. Lots of things
to be happy about. Clay is the real deal, too.To the petty BYU fans
barking on this comment board, have fun playing your lame schedule, beginning
with the mighty UConn Huskies---they do have a football team, don't they?
I can't believe I am saying this but I was really disappointed in our
defense today.Orphey was getting beat all game, well in the first
half that he played anyway. Good news, I don't recall a pass being thrown
to Row's side. And where was our run stop defense? We also
need Gionni Paul to get healthy quick. I hope he's ready by the Michigan
game. The depth at QB seems to have been resolved, true test will be
next wee. The WRs and RBs are as good as hyped during fall camp.It
seems we finally have an offense, lets hope that are defense doesn't go
missing now.Special Teams: AOffense: B-Defense: CThere's room to improve! Go UTES!
Seniors, as above, not a bad game. Now that it's over, just curious about
your 7-5 prediction: Where are these 7 wins coming from? Looking over the
Utes' schedule:ISU: W (in the books)Fresno: Fine, WAt Michigan: NOWSU: Fine, W, maybeAt UCLA: NOAt OSU: NOUSC: NOAt ASU: NO (and don't even think about it) :)Oregon:
NOAt Stanford: NOArizona: NO (but close, maybe W)At Colorado:
NOThat's 3-9. Maybe 4-8 if you pull off a win over the
Mildcats. Realistically, you're playing with a QB who's a tough kid
mentally and a great competitor but only a solid hit away from ending his
career, a defense that'd be fine for the Mountain West but not strong
enough for very many Pac-12 wins, and a league that's stacked top to
bottom, but mostly at the top. Worst of all, you play a LOT of teams at the top.
Seniors, where are the horses who're going to pull off the 3 or 4 more wins
you're expecting? Not seeing it.
@ CougsndawgsPretty spot on. The D-line in concerning, but I'm
more worried about the secondary. ISU's receivers were getting separation
way too easily, and there just aren't any playmakers back there. I
don't know what the problem is, but Utah doesn't seem to be able to
Jefe-Ute"Defense use to be the strength of Utah
football."Obviously not any more. Giving up 178 yards rushing to
an Idaho State team that only averaged 69 yards/game last season is
The corners couldn't get their heads around to even look for the ball. If
that continues, we are going to get burned on the deep ball all season long.Congrats to Clay and the three qb's who played. O-line was really
poor when Thompson was in the game. He's quick. Cox looked great.
Impressed with the offense even though they showed very little. Not impressed
with defensive front and our db's. Props to special teams.
I would say that went pretty much as expected. If I were a Utah fan I would be
happy about the QB play and depth which looks improved from last year. There
also seems to be more playmakers and overall depth on the offensive side of the
ball. My concern would be on defense. I was surprised at the lack of physicality
on the defensive line, and the consistent ability of ISU to convert on third
down. I think the defense has to improve on all three levels...giving up 336
yards and 21 first downs to a bad FCS team doesn't bode well. However, it
was the first game against Idaho St so I wouldn't put too much stock in
anything. Overall I thought Utah performed well and appears to be better than
last year, but only time will tell.
Defense use to be the strength of Utah football. I was not impressed, especially
our corners. The only corner I thought played decent was Hatfield. Offense
started a little shaky, but was able to pick it up. Cox>Thompson. I hope
Utah comes out firing against Fresno State with all the kinks figured out or it
could be a long season.
Too bad Idaho state won't count in the six wins you need to be in a bowl
game. But u won't win five more anyway!
This proves we are a big boy and it will help our ranking a whole bunch.Go Utes!
Yes baby, we're undefeated! This win guarantees us a spot in the playoffs!
Mark it down!
Well a win is a win.Line play on both sides needs to be better.
Linebackers were non existent. We just need more playmakers on D in general.
Also, I wasn't impressed with Utah's depth. Good news is
QB's looked pretty good. RBs and WRs were as good as advertised. And Clay
is a playmaker. Hopefully Utah can take a step forward next week and grab
another W against Fresno St.Go Utes!
@ eagle"Most of you" play at least 7 cupcakes.
For most of us 7-5 is mediocre and nothing to crow about period...
Good warm up game.
Seniors, looks like a nice game, you bet--but don't you think it's a
teensy teeny bit premature to start crowing about a 7-5 season based on two
quarters against Idaho State? Just a thought.
Typical officiating from the conference with the worst officiating crews;
everybody knows that a receiver must establish possession by having at least one
foot come down in bounds.
Idaho State Scores a touchdown???WHATT?? Don't they
know they are playing a PAC 12 Team??
Idaho threatening to score?OH MY....
Should be fun game. I think Coach Christensen will hide most of our NASCAR
offense but we should still win 55-7 if we go easy in the 4th quarter. Utah WILL go 7-5 this year! Love being back at RES. This place is electric!
