"ESPN's Mark Schlabach wrote that he believes a pair of Utah schools — BYU and Utah State — could be one of the non-Power 5 teams to make a run at the four-team playoff this season."

It's interesting how the Utah teams that are supposedly on the "outside looking in" at the playoffs, are considered potential playoff spoilers, while the team that's spent the entire off season bragging about being on the "inside looking out", isn't even mentioned as a contender by any of the media.

Congratulations to BYU and Utah State for being considered potential playoff spoilers by the national media in this, the first year, of the major college football playoffs!

Can't wait to see the barrage of whiny spin from the hill.

Bronco Mendenhall has already stated that he thought it would take back-to-back undefeated seasons for BYU to get an invitation to playoffs.

Just as BYU's one-loss, #7 finish in 1983 was BYU's setup season to it's undefeated, National Championship season in 1984, 2014 could be the setup season for BYU to break into the playoffs in 2015.

Good luck to the Cougars and Aggies!

You don't think that has SOMETHING to do with the fact that USU and BYU are NOT in a P5?

If you say no, you're kidding yourself.

BYU and USU are being viewed as potential spoilers BECAUSE OF the easier time they would have getting there. Neither USU or BYU would be considered in this story if they played in the Pac 12... because the chances of them reaching the final four in that scenario is next to zero.

BYU has to go undefeated to make it. So don't even waste your breath trying to argue that BYU could possibly go undefeated this year if they had a full Pac 12 slate like Utah does.

FIVE losses would be BYU's minimum in the Pac 12 this year. And we know that wouldn't get them even a whiff of the playoff.

Very clever!

I see that Tomahawk Red has already started the barrage of whiny spin from the hill.

The truth is, both BYU and Utah State have a much better chance of making the playoffs in 2014, than Utah. That's not saying that either has more than a very slim chance, but, a very slim chance is still much better than no chance.

Good luck Cougars and Aggies!

Good luck with your quest for another SOS trophy.

We're sure it'll be a great comfort to Utah fans when you're spending another bowl season on the couch.

Do you really think Utah would have finished undefeated and qualified for a bowl if the Utes had played in the PAC 12 in 2004 or 2008?

It's interesting how Utah fans we so full of themselves when Utah upset Alabama in 2008, claiming that Utah could compete with anybody, but now that you're forced to play a big boy schedule, all you can do is make whiny excuses for your lack of success.

The advantage of not having to face a big boy schedule is that BYU and Utah State both have a chance of having undefeated seasons and at least being in the playoff discussion.

If the Utes had played in the PAC 12, Utah might have qualified for a bowl in 2004 and 2008, but definitely not a bcs bowl, and it's doubtful that either team would have been ranked in the final polls.

Of course they wouldn't have.

What's your point?

It's fun to see both BYU and Utah State being recognized by the national media and funny to see Utah fans trying desperately to explain why Utah won't even get a whiff at the playoffs.

They could be in the discussion at 12-0. But they would not get in.

I'm sorry but that selection committee is not going to select an undefeated mid major like BYU or USU over an undefeated or 1-loss P5 team. There's just no way. Not with the schedules BYU and USU play this year.

Your only shot at an invite is if every P5 team at season's end has 2 or more losses... or other mid majors are in the top 4.

The point is, despite the bluster from the hill, even as a P5, the Utes are still on the outside looking in when it comes to the playoffs.

Do I have to explain this to YOU too?

Utah is not a mid major. So why would they ever show up on a list called "top 5 mid majors who may crash the playoffs?"

In fairness, so far, Utah fan(s) equates to tomahawk. It IS interesting that when an outside national commentator says something like this, the predictable response from some is that BYU fans are so arrogant, blue kool-aid blind, ignorant and foolish.

I read something like this and think to myself, this promises to be interesting.

Two more weeks till we all have something new to start talking about!

Do you need me to repeat myself? My point was in my last post.

BYU needs every P5 to have 2 or more losses.

Seems pretty simple to understand.

Did BYU just get their 9th win of the 2013 season? I see ND is going to vacate their wins in which the players they suspended today for academic fraud participated in last year. Just wondering.

On this topic, I'm a Y alum and attended the U, both fine schools that currently have mediocre football programs. Neither has a shot at the playoff. This drivel about playoff spoilers is written now because a month from now the list of possible spoilers will more than likely have zero teams on it.

If you want an interesting speculative article, try one on which two P5 conferences are the most likely not to have a team in the playoff when the SEC gets its inevitable 2 teams in the playoff.

If FSU is a one loss team as the defending champs (hard to see how they lose more than one with their schedule) and 2 SEC teams are in, there's only one spot left for the BIG 10, PAC-12 and BIG-12 to fight over.

Being a BYU fan right now means enjoying each game as an event unto itself. No matter what happens the Cougs will be in Miami come December, Utah St will get a nice little bowl bid and the Utes can enjoy their popcorn and easy chairs.

But Utah is in the PAC 12 and that's still pretty cool.
