Strange I was just outside and the sky wasn't falling.

Mr. Cook, your words would have more meaning if you actually joined the armed forces. It's far too easy to criticize the president and demand action while you sit comfortably in your own home typing on a laptop.

Will you assume the full costs of war? Will you join and fight? Will you pay Higher taxes, food rationing, and even the spilling of blood from your family?

A very applicable quote:

"Wars are poor chisels for carving out peaceful tomorrows."

- Martin Luther King Jr.

We've tried war before. Perhaps a different strategy should be employed?

"Then we need to get the incapable leaders out of office, and bring America back to its strength morally, spiritually and militarily."

Please elaborate. When was the last time we were "morally, spiritually and militarily" strong?

Was it under Bush/Cheney? Just trying to understand?

This letter is merely a vague, fact-free rant from America's ultra-right.

But I do agree that we ought to "get the incapable leaders out of office." Let's start by voting against any candidate who embraces Tea Party ideologies.

My president is highly-qualified, highly-intelligent, and highly-capable.

One of the major problems our country faces is a huge segment of the population can't live with the fact that their guy didn't win. That is why we have the divisive monkey wrenching, intransigence along with obstructionist politics (which is what the Utah delegation is part of).

We tried the Bush doctrine and should have learned that "we can bomb the world into pieces, but we can't bomb it into peace"

Factual errors abound. The Treaty of Amiens was signed in 1802, not 1803. It wasn't a surrender to France, though popular British opinion at the time thought it too favorable to Napoleon; that, combined with Napoleon's continued aggressions, is why it only lasted a year. Addington was ousted from office in 1804. Napoleon's famous "100 Days" after Elba happened in 1815, and have precisely nothing to do with Amiens or Addington.

Where are we "being assaulted on every side"? What existential threat is our Napoleon or Hitler? What forces are arrayed against us? Why the reference to Israel? Is Hamas digging tunnels under our borders, or firing rockets at our cities?

What are our moral and spiritual strengths? How will they help us against these nebulous forces arrayed against us? Considering the levels of our military spending, what more must be done to return to our military strength? To fight whom? Where? Insurgents? Third-rate Middle East armies? Russians? Chinese? Latinos spilling over the border? Defining the opposition is critical to martial readiness.

Enough with opaque references. Exactly what dragons need slaying? I had my belly full of quixotic quests against vague national security threats while in Iraq.

Just who has bombed us lately? Who captured Bin Laden? Whose economy is still the envy of the world? What country enjoys a more vigorous debate on issues? Why are kids so desperate to live here they travel across deserts, risking their life, just to have a shot at the American dream?

I may not always like what the current government does. However, we do live in relatively security. Actually, I am more afraid of guns in the hands of a citizen of this country than I am of invasion by a foreign power.

The world faces significant challenges to be sure. Every generation does, and our ideals and our financial vigor will give us the advantage in most every situation. We are the envy of the world, and no victim.

I feel sorry for the LTE that such blatant fear and loathing of the current administration has defined their view of the world in such apocalyptic terms.

"America is now being assaulted on every side"

And just what country do you live in sir? Or do you imagine that America is being assaulted from the south with an onslaught of 6 year olds, and a deluge of actors and musicians from the north. Oh the terror and moral collapse.

The country has just experienced the largest quarterly growth in 10 years, the stock market is at all time highs and home prices and sales are solid again. And oh yea our annual deficit is the lowest in nearly 10 years. We truly are witnessing the collapse of a nation.

And as proof of our weak and feckless foreign policy, this very paper just last week published an international survey about the worlds opinion of America and our President and the entire civilized world held nearly a 70+% favorable view.

I'm sure there's much to disagree about but a collapse of America under this President...I don't think so.

A leader can only lead as well as the tools of leadership available to him. Early on, the only tool a leader needed was size, then came the club and the atomic bomb. But even weapons have no force now as we enter into the leadership era of implied consent.

We can elect a leader as our President but if we deny him the tools of acceptance and support, he won't be able to lead the nation and we will wallow in despair. The people of America elected President Obama and gave him acceptance and support. But a portion of America set to work to remove that acceptance by the force of media and for the most part have succeeded. They have set aside the voice of the people's vote.

Let's see --
Addington looses to Napoleon and resigns,
Chamberlain looses to Hitler and resigns,
and
Pres. Obama kills Osama Bin Laden, turns the tanking economy around, the Stock Market has rebounded and set record highs,
and this letter writer wants him to re-sign?!

Seriously,
at least draw a corresponding, accurate conclusion.

I really think this letter is meant to be funny. An exquisite parody of a Tea Party rant. Well done!

This wins the award for greatest fact free rant this Sunday on the Deseret News. Nice job!

Folks, this is what happens when you listen to way too much hate radio and tv. My church teaches about moderation in all things.

So what are Vernon's solutions? Elect Mitt Romney? Out spend Chinese defense spending 10 times instead of just 4? Nuke the Ruskies? Invade Iran? Third time might be a charm in Iraq?

What would you have us do? Vernon, you're in charge. Now that your 5 minute rant is over, let's have a discussion. What would you do differently?

So let our country and its infrastructure fall apart so a bunch of right-wingers can thump their chests and play war.

Got it.

Mr Cook, did you know that in the 80s we helped arm Iran? Those same weapons are being used against us.
Did you know that in the 80s we helped to support the Taliban?
Did you know that we have spent over $2 trillion in Iraq? Over 5,000 Americans and nearly 1 million Iraqis have been killed! Iraq is far worse off as a democracy than they ever were under Hussein. At least he kept the country together!
Did you know that we outspend the rest of the world in defense spending nearly 2 times over?
Did you know that President Obama captured the world's #1 terrorist and master mind behind 9/11?
Did you know that under Obama's presidency we have seen a sharp decline in embassy attacks and deaths compared to the Bush regime?

If you're fearful of American security and prestige around the world, then why on earth would you ever vote for a republican president? All they do is lie about wars, arm terrorist groups, and waste money. Low information voters need to become informed! We cannot survive anymore republican "compassionate conservatism."

Ranting about "invisible canons" and being at war from all sides was a common strategy used by a certain Austrian political speaker who led a revolution in Germany in the 1930s.

The fascist right wants us all to feel that we're under attack so that they can pass laws which restrict freedom and invade countries, like Iraq, that haven't attacked us.

Will we fall for the fascist GOP again? Or will we stand up for freedom by voting democrats in November? Guess we'll find out!

Vernon Cook the nay's, as can be expected, are lined up against you. For what it is worth, even though your history is off a bit, one agrees with the crux (essential/deciding point) of your opinion.

Template letter, different signature at the bottom.
Are there any republicans who can offer solutions/support/reasonable intelligence? Anywhere??

Such nonsense. We are fit and getting more so.

This quote by Abraham Lincoln perfectly states the issue here.
