"American involvement has to rate as one of the greatest blunders in modern
history."Would have to disagree with you on that statement. I
would say that the Versailles Treaty " has to rate as one of the greatest
blunders in modern history", something the French acknowledge openly in
their WWII museum, Mémorial de Caen. WWI was a tragic and
avoidable event in of itself. If was fought for all the wrong reasons.
America's efforts though to bring it to an end were not the mistake... it
was the right and Humanitarian thing to do. Go to Verdun, tell me that bringing
battle like that to an end was not the right thing to do.
There may have been a sense of inevitability regarding the war, but not so much
with U.S. involvement in it. The decision to send American forces broke a
stalemate that likely would have ended in some kind of resolution all parties
could have lived with. Once American forces tipped the scales against Germany
and its allies, the tragic consequences of the Versailles Treaty were virtually
a sure thing. American involvement has to rate as one of the greatest blunders
in modern history.
